Time to weigh in folks. I got an iPhone this weekend, and while I'm trying not to get completely obsessed with this lovely toy, it's clear that I have merged on to the express lanes of the information superhighway. This leaves me to seek feedback on two ideas...
iPhone Users: What are the 'Must-Have' aps for a movie geek?
Content aps for blogs, critics, or media outlets. Feature aps that can give me movie related games, or tell me if I need to sit all the way through the credits for an easter egg. What sorts of aps do y'all use to further your cinematic geekery?
Should I Tweet?
This last week especially, I have come under immense peer pressure from some locals who shall remain nameless to protect their innocence. I have a sliver of an interest in Twitter, but haven't the foggiest clue what I could do with it that is worthwhile that I can't accomplish with the blog or Facebook.
C'mon people...help a Hatter out!

Twitter: brilliant for brief conversations with similar or differently-minded people on topics of current or historical interest. E.g; the other night I asked about the difference between the theatrical and Donner versions of SUPERMAN II and ended up discussing with various people the merits and demerits of both. Similarly, whilst watching The Graham Norton with Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms several people chimed in to discuss the fact that regardless of the quality of their film, they were both utterly hilarious. Caution: twitter needs your time, input and dedication to make it work properly but it gets a ringing endorsement from me, would be good to see you on it.
iPhone apps:
IMDB-app (of course)
Vimeo (works only on iPhone 4)
I have a WP app that let me check comments and write blogposts on the phone might be worth to check out if there is a blogspot counterpart.
Cinando's app might be something to have in the phone during Tiff but its mostly market orientated.
There is also a swedish app that has filmtrailers on it search for filmtrailer on the appstore.
Other must have apps are Feedler (RSS reader) and Dropbox that you might be familiar with.
Twitter is great for fast short updates. For instance your festival coverage will have another dimension with your own #hashtag
Welcome to the world of smart phones!
I've always wondered why you don't use Twitter. You definitely should! And it will help your blog even more. I hope you will create your account.
twitter, as fun as it can be at times, has it's moments of complete narcissism that makes you feel dumb... but you probably get that feeling from blogging anyways.
I say what I told you a while back. Do as you wish. If you feel FB is enough for you then so be it. Don't make other people make you join twitter. You'll only find the noise annoying and quit.
On iPhone Apps:
*shrug* no have, no want.
On Twitter:
Plus Sides -
1. Can be lots of fun once you find your niche in the greater community.
2. Real-time discussions beat - without argument - the comment, wait, comment, wait, comment, wait system of Facebook and Blogs.
3. You've got a built in community among the handful of us already out there.
4. Quick and easy place to vent frustration.
Down Sides -
1. The stinch of snobbery can be absolutely dreadful some days.
2. You have to navigate the treacherous waters of Tween mania to get past through
3. Limited trackback - lots of yelling on twitter, not as much reading as one might like.
4. You'd have to put up with my satirical lambasting of movies for the sake of doing so. You know, because I assume you'd follow me :P
iPhone Apps:
Netflix-Can watch anything that's available for streaming.
IMDB-Should go without saying.
Movies-Seriously, that's the name of the app, but it allows you to keep a catalog of your dvd library with you, as well as a wish list. You can also keep track of movies you've loaned out. But the best part is that your camera will scan the barcode on the dvd/Blu-Ray case and pull up all the info for you instead of manually typing it all in (though you have that option to).
MovieCat-My favorite movie game app.
Fandago-Just to check local movie times.
These are my most often used movie apps, but there are many more out there.
Rachel: Thanks for some great suggestions!
You're welcome, Joel! The Movies app is probably the most I've ever spent on an app (at $3.99) but so worth it if you use it regularly.
I also forgot to mention the Oscars app that has (had) all the current nominees and film info and allows you to keep track of your predictions, and "battle" friends to see who gets the most right.
Rachel- I just loaded Movie Cat. LOVE IT!!
@ Film Intel... Good point. Still not sure I'll jump on, but I hear ya.
@ Joel... I downloaded Dropbox on to my iMac last night, so that might be a good one to carry over as well. Thanks for all the suggestions.
@ Lesya... Still unsure. BTW - did I pronounce your name correct in the most recent Matineecast?
@ Andrew... Feel dumb? I feel dumb just rolling out of bed in the morning...I don't need Twitter to help me with that.
@ Univarn... Interesting points all - not sure you leave me leaning one way or the other.
@ Rachel... Damn girl! Aiming to win the 'Comment of The day' award are we? Looks awesome - thanks for everything.
@ Lady Hatter... Put down the iPhone and get back to work.
As has been said - IMDB ... I use it more times than I can mention.
Netflix and Vimeo - Consult your data plan before going full force on those as they can eat away at that pretty quickly.
I have the Tribute app and Flixster as well. The Tribute one is great as it can tap into your GPS and list the theaters near you, movies, and showtimes. Very handy.
Lady Hatter-I was seriously addicted to that game when I first downloaded it. I don't think I worked for a week.
Hatter-Wait...there's a Comment of the Day Award?! Mine! (Sorry, two straight days with a two year old makes me a little selfish.)
I forgot a good one, Instapaper. Its actually a webservice but there you save longer blogposts, articles etc. for offline reading. Its perfect when combined with Feedler.
Some good suggestions that I'll need to follow up with tonight...
No one has suggested Angry Birds to you yet though?! Get on that man! Stat! And if it has to be movie related, get the Angry Birds Rio new release. You will thank me.
As for Twitter, one upside is that you can reach an entirely new extension of the movie "geek" audience out there. It's more direct and immediate. People I've never met or heard of before began to follow me - either because they saw a Retweet of one of my tweets or someone recommended me as a Friday Follow (it's very social this social media thing, ya know?).
Andrew's partially right in that it can be too much, but - as with any of the social media tools out there - you make of it what you want. Too much noise? Filter it. Unfollow people that no longer interest you. Keep your tweets to your specific field of interest (or, open it up to include several and broaden your audience even more). It's up to you...I bug you to get on solely because I think it would extend your blog and, probably more importantly, your "presence" within the online film community. It's just a tool, but used properly (and I don't doubt you would find the proper way to use it FOR YOU) it can be very effective.
Unless you get sucked into playing Angry Birds...Then you'll have no time for it at all. B-)
@Mad, I haven't listened to the latest edition of the Matineecast. However, I'll check it out and let you know. Beforehand, thanks for the mention there!
You have joined the forces of evil. But yes, you should definitely tweet!
Moviefone's app is good for local movie showtimes, trailers and news articles. I have the Android version, but I am assuming it is pretty much identical to the iPhone.
I would help you with the phone thing, except I've had the same one since 5th grade. So there's that.
Twitter is purely enjoyable. Quick conversations - and you find a lot of interesting stuff - if and only if you follow the right people - like me ;D
You should definitely join man - I'll follow you :D

So Skype just told me it's your birthday today! Happy Birthday :)
Movie Cat is sick! I'll be getting nothing constructive done today ... Thanks EVER so much for that one 0.o
tttwwwwiittttteeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....
@ Sasha... Three days in now and I still haven't felt the urge. It ain't looking pretty.
