There's a new weekly feature in town, and given its nature, I thought I'd start posting it on Saturday nights to go along with my "Today, I Feel Like This" series.
This year I wanted to keep tabs on precisely how many movies I watch, even though I think I might be frightened by the results. So here's the weekly watchlist, with a thought or two on each...
Screenings
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA - Much as I already loved this film, seeing in 70mm brought it to whole new level.
Blu-Rays/DVD's I've Never Seen
MIRRORMASK - On loan from Danger Girl and suggested by Nick. Not bad and awful pretty.
FRIED GREEN TOMATOES - Way more chick-flicky than I should be allowed to watch.
ALEXANDER - That's four hours I'm never getting back
ONDINE - Uneven, but comes with a lot to love.
Blu-Rays/DVD's I've Watched Before
THE NEW WORLD - Been on a bit of a Terrance Malick kick lately
NIGHT OF THE HUNTER - One of those classics I think more people need to watch.
A SINGLE MAN - That kid from ABOUT A BOY sure did a good job of growing up.
SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD - Still awesome.
Boxscore for The Year
4 First-Timers, 5 Re-Watched
9 Movies in Total
How's about you - seen anything good?

I heard the Director's Cut of ALEXANDER is supposed to be good... or was that KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (which was already good to being with). Hmmm... shame. I was thinking of checking it out at some point.
TOTALLY agree on The Night of the Hunter. Mitchum is so good.
Sorry - I should have warned you to skip Alexander. I forgot that was part of his list. I watched it back in the week of Angelina. SO bad.
Fried Green Tomatoes is awesome - bite your tongue. Great new feature!
Colin Farrell much?
I would have gone with "Eight Days a Week."
True Grit
Black Swan
About a Boy
Burton's Alice
part of Zach and Miri
Beautiful Girls
@ Sebastian... It's definitely KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. That flick is underrated.
@ Movienut... Pity you didn't get in faster when I was giving away my dvd copy. Dangergirl beat ya to it.
@ Jess... I will not bite it. I didn't say it was bad, I said it was chick-flicky. No way you can argue that.
@ Fletch... There's a reason for all the Colin, which will be revealed later.
What'd you think of BLACK SWAN?
What'd you think of BLACK SWAN?
I liked it quite a bit, but the more I think about it, the more I think Aronofsky's movies are like a piece of really cool technology. They are easy to appreciate for the skill and expertise that went into making them, but hard to emotionally connect to in a way that someone might for something like, say, Almost Famous. They keep you at a distance and are far too uncomfortable to truly love. Admire the hell out of them, but they'll never be close to your heart.
The closest to come to that (and not even for me necessarily, but based more on the subject matter) would be The Fountain, I'd think, given that it's about undying love and all.
I was going to comment but, instead, you will be BLOG OF THE WEEK on the podcast ... and I shall comment there instead ...

Glad you liked MirrorMask.
@ Dylan... Interesting, but I was actually very much emotionally invested in THE WRESTLER and still can't re-watch REQUIEM for how much it screws me up in the end.
Not so much for you?
@ Simon... Cha-CHING!! Thanks mate, lookin' even more forward to listening now.
@ Nick... Made for a good test-drive for the blu-ray player, even if the copy only was DVD
Saw Tangled this week - I quite liked it, but the musical numbers all fell a bit flat. That led to me renting Aladdin, The Lion King and The Little Mermaid, none of which I'd seen since I was about six or seven. Man, do they hold up.
A Colin Farrell bender...I'll be having one of those myself here soon. Blech!
@ Tom... I can't remember the last time I sat through those 90's Disney films (and we own 'em all). Perhaps I'll have to make a post out of it.
@ Rachel... And whose fault is that?
Interesting idea - especially since I recently gave up on my movie spreadsheet - not sure if I'd be able to sustain this either - but always interested in what others are watching.
I watched How To Train Your Dragon, as you know.
And Night of the Comet. :)
Everything else I've managed to see this week has been about getting caught up on TV series that are back to business post-holidays now!
THE USUAL SUSPECTS last night, THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM* Saturday night, UNDERWORLD (a guilty pleasure, but Shane Brolly as Kraven is bad, bad, bad).
*I picked up BOURNE, HEAT and THE THING new, on Blu-ray at Blockbuster for a total of $45 after tax. Gots to dig through those bins people.
@ CBlaze... Remember on the old space when I used to do my "Currently" posts? Thought I could do something similar over here...only took me more than three years to figure out what.
@ Sue... What's Night of the Comet?
@ Dave... Good stuff, but I'll always equate UNDERWORLD as the only movie I've ever been able to totally follow despite watching it on mute.
Long live $15 blu-ray!
Hatter... I think I about choked with you asking "What's Night of the Comet?" in the same way you would choke if I asked something like, say... "What's High Noon?"
@ Nick... Yeah.....they're totally the same.
I mean in the sense that you're a fanatic for classic films and would react to someone saying that. Well, Night of the Comet is a classic B-movie... the types of movies I'm more likely to watch.
THAT'S the comparison I meant, not the movies themselves.
