Midnight Radio: The Matineecast Episode 25

My episodes have been clocking in over an hour recently, so i made a conscious effort to keep this one brief. Not sure how much fifteen minutes will help, but what's done is done.

I feel like I've been talking about this week's feature film for a while, but if you're getting weary of hearing me talk about it, I promise that you won't hear much more about it from me from here-on. But for now, I still feel the desire to spread the word...hopefully some theatre managers will listen and book the film so some of you fine folks in smaller towns can finally get to see this movie.

Here's the Mike Lowell episode...

(Go here or to iTunes if the embedded player doesn't start)

Here's what's in store in episode twenty-five...

Runtime
54 minutes, 12 seconds

1. Introduction
2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY - Q & A with this episode's guest, Vanessa Locke from The World According to Ness. (1:46)

4. THE NEW SLANG - Review and reaction of 127 HOURS (12:19)
5. THE BEST OF YOU - Ness and I talk about our favorite desperate measures movies. (25:44)

Comments and feedback are welcome, and thank-you very much for listening.

Gotta say, I was shocked that Ness hadn't a clue what was coming during the movie. You guys did a good job of avoiding serious spoilers (I already knew he cut his arm off, I've read the book) while still giving a good feel for the movie.

I'm looking this year to trade in my old worn copy of Seven Samurai for the nice, shiny, Criterion one.

My favorite film about a characters forced to go to desperate measures: Shawshank Redemption. It's a bit of a wild card in the discussion, but I think it qualifies if you look at it from the perspective of twenty years of being broken down mentally only to finally get pushed to that very breaking point where it's escape or suicide.

Great episode as always.

BTW, Hatter, I'm starting my own sort of comment contest thing at FFTSBH tomorrow (Tuesday). People come up with a witty phrase to go with a screen grab from a random movie. Head on over and take part. Thanks.

@ Jess... Like I said, if I got her to go to that blind then I feel like I owe her one. I thought we spoiled the holy hell out of the movie, but I'm happy to know it comes off otherwise.

PS - Per 'Come Talk to Me'...what dvd/blu ray are you hoping to get for Christmas?

@ Univarn... Dammit! I was pulling my hair out for this list...how did I forget that?

@ Sebastian... Count me in. You gonna chime in and tell Santa what you want for Christmas?

I want "The Kids are All Right" and "Toy Story 2&3".

Two Polanski films for Ness. Nice! Hatter, get on the Ghost Writer! One of the ten best of the year in my opinion - mostly for tone, mood and visual aspects.

Also in re to Silence of the Lambs. There are a number of desperate measure moments in that movie. The overall arching one is what you mentioned (police going to killer for help catching a killer). But there is also Lector taking some pretty desperate measures to escape captivity.

@ Andrew... Yeah, that whole film feels like one desperate move after another, doesn't it?

This episode was recorded a week before it was posted, so I have made ammends for my lack of GHOST WRITER experience. The more I think back on it, the more I like it. Kinda bummed that I didn't see it in theatres!

BTW - You didn't mention, what would you like to find under the James Family Christmas Tree?

Still haven't seen 127 Hours. *sigh* Good episode nonetheless. Children of Men is in my top 5 of all time, so I was happy to hear it named.

And if there isn't Inception and Scott Pilgrim under my Christmas tree, there will be hell to pay. Also the entire series of Coupling, but that t.v.

@ Rachel... thanks for listening (via doofy headphones I hope). Mapping out what to say about 127 was a little tricky since I feel like I've talked about it a lot, including our fun bit of chatter on your podcast!

Here's hoping that totems and bass solos are found under the Thuro Family Christmas Tree.
