Midnight Radio: The Matineecast Episode 23.5

When I started this podcast close to one year back, if you told me that I'd go on to talk to an Oscar winner, I'd have laughed and told you to try selling the crazy somewhere else. And yet, strangely, here we are.

Walter Murch has won Oscars for his work on APOCALYPSE NOW and THE ENGLISH PATIENT. He was also nominated for his work on COLD MOUNTAIN, GHOST, THE GODFATHER III, JULIA and THE CONVERSATION. And here he is, talking with little old me (Not to be outdone - I was once voted Employee of The Week at a suburban Toronto bagel shop).

So please take a listen to our conversation about APOCALYPSE NOW, the historical context of film, and the art of editing.

(Go here or to iTunes if the embedded player doesn't start)

Here's what's in store in episode twenty-three point five...

Runtime
56 minutes, 38 seconds

Up for Discussion

1. Introduction
2. CHAPTER ONE - My Q&A with Mr. Murch, including an attempt at "Know Your Enemy" (2:15)
3. CHAPTER TWO - Lady Hatter joins the fray and two editors have at it while I chime in from the peanut gallery. (17:34)
4. CHAPTER THREE - After the screening of REDUX, Murch fields a series of questions from the audience gathered at The Lightbox (23:41)

Comments and feedback are welcome, and thank-you very much for listening.

Enjoy!

I love the quote about how "great editing makes it look like the film wasn't directed at all".

Also I got a huge kick out of hearing about Lucas' making Star Wars his version of Apocalypse Now. Very interesting! Oh btw, it's neat to learn that Lady Hatter is an editor:)

@ Cheshire... I'll try not to get too ahead of myself on my "to-interview" wishlist, but thanks for listening.

@ Simon... Funny story as to how I wrangled this opportunity:

I asked.

Hope you like it when you have a chance to listen.

@ Marc... She is indeed, which makes life interesting given that I'm a writer (editors and writers go about problem solving rather differently).

Loved the bit about Lucas. gave me a huge grin at the time so I knew I'd have to include that bit.

I'm a bit busy this afternoon and am supposed to see Morning Glory tonight but I can't wait to tune in later tonight or tomorrow!

Any podcast that opens with The Doors is a fine, fine podcast.

Look at you, getting an Oscar winner in your midsts. Damn.

I loved the bit about the Touch of Evil myth. I mean, I love Hollywood myths in general, but ones involving Orson Welles are the best.

Um.

I have to follow this?

What the hell, dude.

@ Castor... Thank you for taking the MORNING GLORY bullet for the rest of us. Looking forward to hearing what you think of this mad experiment.

@ Simon... Yeah, it was interesting to hear him outline the difference between revisiting a project that was under control the whole way, and one that was bastardized by the studio.

Thanks for listening!

@ Sasha... You'll do great dude. Least for my sake I know I'll be less nervous a host!

What a great podcast - and, again, the highlight is those KNOW YOUR ENEMY questions!

The lucas info was interesting but I was more interested in the actual demons martin sheen faced - and the change from kurtz to lili - and back again and it gives a great insight into the editing process.

I cannot praise you enough Hatter - absolutely amazing. I think I am off to write my first itunes review ...

@ Mad: I'm glad to have taken the Morning Glory bullet, it was surprisingly good ;)

Really awesome podcast, this is the kind of unglamorous, behind-the-scene aspects I really love to learn about. You are kind of a big deal now having an Oscar winner sit down with you for an interview! ;) In any case, consider yourself linked (on Thursday)

The Mad Hatter said...

@ Columb... Erm, the 'Know Your Enemy' bit didn't go quite as well as it usually does, but I figured with a guest like Murch that ot wouldn't go so hot. Then again, it was worth it for the DUMBO tidbit.

Glad you liked the Q&A section - I'm all for adding to the enjoyment of an essential!

@ Castor... I might be a big deal, but tell that to my dry cleaner who won't look for my clothes when I forget my ticket.

Thanks in advance for the upcoming link.

Getting some love from Row Three too. Well deserved.

Walter! Freaking! Murch!? Hatter, you and your powers of persuasion have been holding out on me. I just finished chapter one on the bus to work, gonna devour the next two on the way home. Murch is a hero of both Brian and myself, as we are both editors first and film geeks second. Great questions for the man - brought out some of the details I'd wanna hear. Loved the bit about why he avoids other films while working on a project!

If I'm not mistaken, sounds like you were sitting near an elevator. Sounds like a great mike you got yourself there!

The Film Cynics said...

That really was something special, Hatter. If you wanna hook a brother up, I'd love to get my hands on the whole recording from the theatre.

"We were burning film like incense in some pagan ritual." Effing brilliant!

The Mad Hatter said...

@ Bob... Very grateful that Andrew did that. Castor at Anomolous Materials, and Steve at The Cynics are also aces in my books for hyping this thing up.

@ Steve... The hardest part of the last four weeks, has been keeping this coup a secret. When I was on your show, I wanted so badly to blurt out "...and if you like my vault pick, tune into The Matineecast in two weeks for my talk with one of the geniuses responsible!"

Thanks for listening amigo, hope you enjoy the bonus material I sent you. And yes - I'm continually amazed at how good the mic on that iPod is.

Have only listened to the first two "chapters" so far but this is a great podcast. Very nicely done, and sounds like Murch is a nice guy and not as intimidating in person as his resume would lead you to think.

The Mad Hatter said...

@ James... (Hopefully you've finished watching by now) Glad you dig it! Murch himself is a very pleasant and personable man, and the only intimidation came from two weekend journalists trying to control their nerves.

I'll tell ya more about it tomorrow at the pub.

Such a great interview. Walter seem to be such an earthbound guy even though he is a true superstar in his field.

I have been listening in to several episodes of your podcast today. Love your format I'll be sure to listen in the future aswell.

And you should give Lady hatter a weekly column on the Dark of the Matinee.

The Mad Hatter said...

@ Joel... He'd just arrived in Toronto off a red-eye flight that day, so it was easy to see that he was rather tired. And yet he still spoke with lil 'ol me.

Thanks for your listenership...it's a labour of love and I'm always proud when i discover somebody new is enjoying the work.

As for Lady Hatter's column.....please don't give the woman ideas.
