Fun fact: I knew close to twenty people who took in this year's Toronto International Film Festival. Not one of them saw THE KING'S SPEECH. And yet, this film snagged The Audience Choice Award for TIFF 2010.
So it's no small wonder that I now find myself looking forward to it quite a bit! After all, in years past the ACA has gone to films like WHALE RIDER, CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON, SHINE, and EASTERN PROMISES.
Perhaps such choices point towards this film being a worthwhile two hours, and perhaps one that we're talking about come Oscar season...

Haven't seen the trailer because my work computer is the worst, but I'd love to see Firth get an Oscar after getting robbed last year. Nothing against The Dude, but Firth totally did get robbed.
Hello my dead Torontonian!
Hi there,
October 27th marked the one year anniversary of the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die Club. Our gracious host and originator of this club, TheAnswerMVP2001, has put the club on Hiatus since July. Today, four months later, I am messaging you, as one of the original members of the club, to see if you are still interested in continuing the tradition of the 1001 Film club. Lets pick up where we left off, selecting films from the extensive 1001 Movies list for the club members to review, and also occasionally review the films that other members have selected.
Long ago, I decided to make 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die the main focus of my website, and this club was a great way of reading what others had to say on the subject, and I miss it. I would be honoured if you would agree to continue our year-old tradition in the same fashion as TheAnswerMVP2001 ran it. I would be happy to host our discussions on my site at Filmsquish.com.
Please let me know if this is something you'd like to continue. If we get enough people on board, I shall pick up the torch and keep it running.
Please feel free to contact me through the contact form at www.Filmsquish.com
I'm not a big fan of those period movies especially those royalty drama but this looks quite different. Colin Firth has a substantial and flashy role that everyone loves to rave about so maybe he will finally gets his due?
This is the main film I'm looking forward to the remaining of the year. With so many meh/downer experiences at the theater this year I'm really looking forward to something aimed to just make me have a good time. I need another Toy Story 3/How to Train your Dragon.
@ Aiden... Totally agree with you on the "robbed". For further proof, listen to episode four of The Matineecast where Cheshire Cat and I rave about how impressive that film was.
@ Squish... Per my email - I'm in.
@ Castor... As luck would have it, I saw this trailer on a big screen tonight, and feel that if momentum can hold, we will see Firth get nominated for this film, if not a handful of others.
@ Univarn... This is your idea of a good time??
Sure, it looks like it could be an uplifting, even fun (highlighted more so in other trailers), film. Besides I love watching Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush act.
I am actually very excited to see Geoffrey Rush's performance in this one! Thanks for the post!-TheScarletSp1der!
@ Univarn... 'Uplifting' I'll grant you. 'Fun'...not so much.
@ Spider... (Welcome to The Matinee!) Rush is one of those guys who always makes things better. Like melted cheese on...well...anything!
Hey man, was just coming on here to see if your TIFF coverage took you to any films that I am set to see at the Leeds International Film Festival, which just happens to kick off this evening with this very film. To be honest I'm not much looking forward to it; I find it hard to sympathise with royalty as they are mostly a complete slap in the face to our so called democracy, but I do have Firth fever since seeing Single man.
If I see any films you caught at TIFF I'll get in touch. Good coverage of the festival by the way.
@ Michael... Just looked over the Leeds programme, and I'd say to give the following films a look if you can (many of these I've seen, the one or two I haven't I'm told are quite good)
ANIMAL KINGDOM
CATFISH
INSIDE JOB
NEVER LET ME GO
THE AMERICAN
THE LOVED ONES
THE KING'S SPEECH
and
THE SOCALLED MOVIE
Don't know if you write about what you watch or not, but if you do, please leave a comment with a link - I'd love to keep up with your coverage.
@ Hatter, yeah I write for Film@Festivals magazine and all will be going on that blog, will leave links. I am due to watch most films on that list (Animal Kingdom's UK Premiere on Saturday). I won't be going to see The American as I assume it will get pretty good distribution as it is and therefore have opted to see something else in the same slot (or actually see my family, ha).
Inside Job I am very much looking forward to.
Right I'll be in touch.
@ Michael... Sounds cool man! be sure to drop a link when your stuff starts going up, either in my comments section somewhere or via email: madhatter(dot)21(at)hotmail(dot)com
VERY excited to see this one. Hope it'll stay around in the indie theater for a while. I love royal historical dramas in general but this one looks funny, heartwarming and just plain delightful... the cast definitely sounds like a winner.
@ Ruth... By the sounds of things, it'll be in line for quite a few award nominations, so I'd say it's a safe bet to stick around your theatre for a while.
didn't know where best to put this, but thought you'd pick it up in here. If you want to e-mail I'm best found at mike.mckenny1983@googlemail.com.
Do you do the twitter tweeting and all that, if so see constant Liff cover @destroyapathy
