Matineecast Feedback Question: What's the worst new film you saw this year?
Know the only thing that sucks about being Canadian during American Thanksgiving? For much of a weekend, most of the American websites I read pretty much stop updating.
But I digress.
Know what's strange? I suddenly find myself in a void of solid-looking new releases. It feels as though there's nothing in between Potter and Tron that I actively feel like I need to see...and that's a gap of about four weeks! BLACK SWAN hits Toronto in that space, but I caught that back at TIFF. This feels especially odd since usually during the holidays I'm struggling to keep up with all the awesomeness unleashed.
On the bright side, it gives me more time to catch classics at The Lightbox...and y'know, enjoy the whole non-movie-going portion of my life too.
For your reading fulfillment, I give you...
A TIFF film that I truly loved, CHICO & RITA, is starting to slowly hit theatres. Fandango has seen it and has put together a swell review.
I've been making up for lost time and going on a bit of a music-downloading bender over the last two days. Seems I'm not alone in my musical mindset as Helms has put together a list of five awesome music moments in film.
Funny story - Sasha the Final Girl had arranged a little get-together this week, but then had to back out of the whole thing shortly before...even though she was organizing it! Pity - she's a cool kid, and always a blast to hang with. Anyway, she's posted a film at a particularly craptastic film from my youth, THE WIZARD.
For...like...a year now...I've been trying to see a film called DOGTOOTH (which might finally be available on dvd here in Toronto). Jake has seen it and has put together a mighty fine review.
I recently stumped a lot of people with my Quotable Quote choice on The Reel Insight podcast even though it's one of the best final lines of all time. Laura over at City Lights is feeling rather quotey herself this week and has dedicated a post to some of her favorites.
Enjoy!

The Wizard is by far the greatest feature length commerical ever made. I was a Sega kid growing up, but the film made we want to jumpship to Nintendo. Man, just thinking about the film now gives me the urge to boot up Super Mario Brothers on the Wii...damn you marketing!
For the linkage, I thank thee. I made sure I have enough going on in my head to keep LiE rolling along for a while. There was a special mentioning of yah in my Thanksgiving post if you had the time to read it (to be fair most non-americans skip over those posts and I don't blame them).
As for what to see, I'm hearing a lot of good feedback for Tangled. In my Obligatory post this week I hypothesized that this year the Animated Best Picture category may usurp the Best Picture category in terms of median quality across the board. Would love to hear your thoughts on the possibility of that :P.
CHICO AND RITA is pretty damn good . though not perfect... always fun to see boobs in animation ...
Simon
Don't worry - we'll be back after this commercial (weekend) break. Loved the photo this week.
Worst new film I've seen? "Dump Truck Woman And King Of Hormones" - don't ask.
As far as more mainstream stuff goes, probably "Diary Of A Wimpy Kid". My son loved it, I thought the main character was a twerp. Not a terrible film, but I do tend to avoid things I'm pretty sure I'll really dislike.
I was really curious to see Chico And Rita at TIFF so that's good to hear that it'll be out at some point. I think Univarn may be on to something regarding the quality of the animated films - The Illusionist and Toy Story 3 alone are two of the best of the year (from what I've seen anyway).
Oh, shut up. Buts thanks for the linkage.
@ CS... I'd forgotten how much of a gigantic bit of product placement that film was 'til I saw it again a few years ago. Kinda makes me rethink being a Rilo Kiley.
@ Helms... Sorry I was late to your Thanksgiving post. Not sure why I forgot to check your space Thursday morning, but better late than never right?
And given how great this year has been for animation with films like ILLUSIONIST and train your dragon, I'd readily agree with you!
@ Simon... That's the problem with Pixar - not enough animated boobs in their films.
@ Jess... Thanks! I took that photo at Toronto's Santa Claus Parade, a tradition I had to skip this year due to a nagging cold. Expect s'more festive photos for the next few E-T posts.
@ Bob... No sale - explain about the dump truck.
@ Sasha... It's alright, just make sure you make it out to the next pub night.
