A Different Drum (Hathaway & Franco to Co-Host Oscars!)

For those of you who don't know, I'm an Oscar junkie. Little provides me more interest in the winter months than thinking about who wil, who won't...and examaining the tea leaves of awards gone by to get some sort of insight on to what will happen.

All of this silliness will begin in earnest again very shortly, with announcements from the National Board of Review and Independent Spirit coming soon. Don't say I didn't warn ya.

But it would seem as though surprises already abound if this story is to be believed according to this story about James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosting this year's ceremony.

It might turn out to be complete hogwash, but the sources seem to be pretty sound. If it is indeed true, I'm intrigued and excited all at once. Both Franco and Hathaway are what I'd call "good sports" (Hathaway especially - for evidence search for her recent katie Holmes impression on SNL). Their enthusiasm and glitz might make for some much-needed energy on the show.

More Hugh Jackman, less Steve Martin.

Then again, how will this all work with Franco potentially being a nominee in the lead actor category? Not like he's a lock to win or anything, but it seems odd for such a contender to be pulling double-duty, no?

Thoughts?

When Neil Patrick Harris hosted the Emmys he was a double nominee and lost both. Hathaway and Franco seem like odd choices, but you're right that they're both good sports, so as long as they have a good director/writer helming the ship, it could turn out wonderfully.

I was quite shocked last year at how big a dud Baldwin and Martin dropped. They're both famous for over the top personas and they played it so straight.

My two hopes for the Oscars this year:
1) Stop screwing with great musical scores/songs in favor of dance numbers.
2) Hathaway and Franco play a bit against their Hollywood stereotypes as "pretty-people"

1. I am an Oscar junkie, too. I almost feel sorry for my family and friends who have to hear out my excited musings on the Academy Awards every winter.

2. Franco and Hathaway look nice as hosts. Some young fresh blood on the Kodak Theater stage during the great ceremony.

3. Indeed, Franco will be nominated (99% sure), so it's kind of weird, if he wins: he'd have to grab his Oscar and then say: "So let's applaud to the best actor of the year". Huh?

4. I should've said it in the first place to shatter your doubts: the official Oscars twitter account confirmed that the two will host the ceremony. So it's true.

5. By the way, between ourselves, the Oscar junkies, are you just interested in the Academy Awards or you love them? As for me, I do respect this grand film event, and I don't always understand haters.

Thanks for this post. As usually, neatly written.

@ Jess... (Shoulda guessed you'd be first to comment). While i was admittedly caught off-guard by this story, like you i find myself very enthused. Here's hoping they can build a good show around this bit of young energy.

Speaking of young, they must be the youngest hosts in a good long while, no?

@ Helms... I don't mind a bit of dancing, but not when it completely takes away from the work that's about to be honoured.

Perhaps they'll do a bit where they present a category as james Dean and Katie Holmes.

@ Lesya... Lordy - what have I unleashed??

1. You aren't alone anymore, that's for certain.

2. Agreed, as per my earlier open question as to whether they're the youngest hosts.

3. I sure hope he's nominated but it's still too early to tell. Stranger things have happened, and I'm starting to get the hunch that a lot of voters could skip this movive...cuz..y'know..."it's icky".

4. Thanks for shattering the doubts. I'll now change that question mark to an exclamation point.

5. I'm fascinated by The Oscars, and with every passing year find myself more and more intrigued by them. There's a lot that can be understood about the collective mentality of Hollywood looking at Oscars' tendencies in the past.

I pretty much dig anything with Franco in it these days, so I'm pumped.

Hey now. Hathaway may score a nod as well. Not to be the speculative one of the group, but if LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS is going to score anything, it'll be for her.

If they do end up hosting, it'll be interesting to see what they do. Neither of them are considered comedians, like John Stewart or Steve Martin, and neither of them are very musically inclined, like Hugh Jackman...

...although Hathaway did help Jackman out with his opening number when he hosted, and she did very well! Girl's got some serious pipes!! Could be interesting!

Has anyone this young hosted the Oscars before? Even though I like both of these actors, I don't think they would be a great choice as hosts. I'd like to see John Cleese do it! Although I guess he is not American...maybe Steve Carell?

Am I the only one who liked Jon Stewart?

I don't think much of it since at the end of the days, it won't really affect how entertaining the Oscars (it's going to be a slumber fest like every years before it). Obviously, the Academy wants to attract younger watchers and this might nudge a few more to tune in but personally, I don't think they are a good choice, in terms of hosting the ceremony.

I'm fine with these two hosting. What I don't want is for Adam Shankman to produce again.

With regards to what Sebastian said: Anne Hathaway has been on Broadway, so I'd say she's pretty musically inclined.

@ Aiden... Heh, you might not feel the same way if you went through his whole back catalogue worth of films!

@ Sebastian... Stranger things have happened, but I'm not hearing a massive amount of buzz coming for "Other Drugs".

@ Vanessa... Great choices both, though I still dearly wish they'd hand it over to Ricky Gervais at least one time.

@ Simon... No you're not - I dug him too.

@ Castor... It's always gonna be a long show, but a good host can make it more fun. I'll give 'em points for thinking outside the box.

@ Mike... Your wish is granted: Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer are producing.

That picture of Hathaway you're using has required me to take repeated cold showers.

@ Perplexio... Glad to help!

I like Steve Martin...

@ Sasha... Me too. And Baldwin. But the two of them did such a toothless job of hosting last year's ceremony.
