Who's Next (Potential TIFF Additions)

This might be the day where I feel the most anticipation...either right ahead, or right behind Christmas Eve. This time tomorrow, I'll have my TIFF ticket in my pocket and whistle my way through the workday chipper with the knowledge that awesome cinema awaits.

But as my festival draws ever nearer, I also start to consider what films I'm going to pick up as I go. This is where talking with people as the fest goes on is tantamount, since you never know which mind-blowing hit you're *this* close to missing. Thus I wonder...will a linemate turn me on to this year's PAN'S LABYRINTH? This year's VENUS??

As it stands, I already have a shortlist of films I hope to scoop tickets for as TIFF goes along (part of the beauty of this festival - precious few shows are really and truly "sold out"). For starters, there's BIUTIFUL and HEREAFTER which I missed off the opening draw.

After that, there's BEAUTIFUL BOY starring Maria Belo and Michael Sheen. It's the story of a couple trying to come to grips with the news that their son has committed a mass shooting at his college.

I'm a titch low on docs, so perhaps I'll add TABLOID by master documentarian Errol Morris. I know Fletch can't get enough doc coverage!

The pervy bastard in me could go for a dose of sex and choose LEAP YEAR. This sort of film, while somewhat awkward to watch with a full house is the sort of thing that will likely never see the light of day - thus, it's appeal increases. (Admit it - you're curious too).

A few years ago a Spanish film called EL ORFANATO gave me a good case of the heebie-jeebies (At one point I whimpered to Susie Q "Hold me, I'm scared"). Guess that holds promise for the fact that the same actress is starring in another Spanish twisted thriller called BAD FAITH.

Last but not least is something called RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE. Why? Well the still shot in the guidebook shows three armed thugs holding Santa Claus in a cage. What more do you need?

Stay tuned to see what I do in fact add as the madness goes along...

Your link to LEAP YEAR leads to TABLOID.

Beautiful Boy could either be really poignant, or really Oscar-baity. Hopefully with the talent involved it'll be the former rather than the latter.

For those who can't wait for Hatter to fix the "Leap Year" link, it's here. And yeah, I'm kinda curious...

The doc lineup this year is REALLY strong. I could have gone half documentaries and been happy (and I'm doing 35 films). Unfortunately, I couldn't squeeze "Tabloid" in - it sounds good though. I bet Fletch didn't even listen to our podcast about Hot Docs...Wanker.

I think you mixed up "Bad Faith" with Julia's Eyes - the latter is the one produced by del Toro and starring Belen Rueda from "The Orphanage". I've already got a ticket for "Julia's Eyes" and definitely looking forward to it (and that's from someone who didn't go crazy for "The Orphanage" like everyone else did - liked it, but it didn't quite connect).

"Bad Faith" was actually one of my top 5 choices, but I didn't get a ticket for it. And now I'm all booked up during its other screenings. Oh well...

I've got "Rare Exports" as well - that looks great doesn't it? I have quite a few Scandinavian selections in the list.

Did I ever send you my full schedule? I don't think we had much crossover, but here it is anyway.

I don't have anything on Thursday, so I have to wait one extra day before I can bounce around the office place all giddy-like (I keep picturing you skipping down an office hallway with an armful of papers and clicking your heels).

I'm hopeful that Beautiful Boy is more on the poignent side. I've got it Tuesday @ noon.

The Way is also either going to be wonderful or trite ... meh - if it sucks I'm ending my night with Super and that is bound to be a blast!

Tabloid did look interesting. So did How to Start your own Country and Cave of Forgotten Dreams. I think I'm still going to try for a ticket to Tamara Drewe, that was one I missed out on.

@ Sean... I love how the film I preclude with "pervy bastard" is the one that got your attention.

@ Fitz... If I don't see it, I'll be sure to get Danger Girl's opinion posted on the blog somehow. Stay tuned.

@ Bob... They're both weird and Spanish. Six of one, half dozen of the other, no? And perhaps I'm being fickle, but the doc lineup this year seems a little lagging compared to years past.

(Not like i've been starved for docs this year anyway!)

Far as I can see our only overlap for now is ILLUSIONIST, so prepare to meet in line there at least - perhaps we'll even record something on the fly!

@ Danger... I think the Tuesday showing was the one I was aiming for. (The details are starting to get fuzzy)

Doc lineup is "lagging"? Really? When I look at the lineup the first 16 alone (that's not even including "Tabloid") all look extremely interesting. Different tastes I guess...No wait, scratch that. What I meant to say is "You're wrong". There. I feel better...B-)

"Bad Faith" is actually Swedish - another of the Scandinavian bunch I had pegged.

Yeah, let's definitely sync up before "The Illusionist". It's my first film that day, so I can easily meet up in line for some early recording if need be.
