Midnight Radio: The Matineecast Episode 21

So, where was I...

Thanks to the handful of you who tuned into my Wicked Little Town series, but it certainly is nice to get back behind a microphone proper. And what better way to get back into the swing and kick off the fall movie season than with a fellow badass movie podcaster?

Here's the Roberto Clemente episode...

Mad, if you go to LA and begin the pro-Citizen Kane charge I'll join you. I hate to use the word "defend," but as a big fan of Citizen Kane I feel as if I'm always defending it against naysayers.

@ Univarn... Been almost a week and you're the only commenter so far. Sorta feel like giving you some sort of prize.

Interested in a dvd copy of THE THIN RED LINE by any chance? Just bought the Criterion this week and now have no need for my original non-Criterion version.

Want it?

Tremendous choice for the opening song!

You guys echoed my Town thoughts almost entirely. It's funny - I haven't seen much deviation from our line of thinking on this flick. Not too many people either claiming it to be terrible or great - everyone is just kinda enjoying it for what it is and moving on. I'm curious to see if it'll be remembered well or mostly forgotten in 10 years. For example, I think a lot of people had a similar reaction to Inside Man, but time has served it well - most probably think better of it now than when they saw it upon its release.

Appreciate the call-outs, but really, as much fun (or not) our little Kane debate can be, I'm being a bit misrepresented. I've never said that I hated it or even disliked it, and I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from watching it...I just think it's wildly overrated, which, for a film that's largely considered to be the BEST FILM OF ALL TIME, shouldn't be all that surprising. And that's all I have to say about that [/Gump].

Sorry I'm not a new writer-inner. ;)

I haven't seen The Town, but great episode and thanks (as always) for not spoiling it.

During the Top 5, I was just waiting for Heat, but you saved it for numero uno.

@ Fletch... Serves me right for hoping to hear from the newbs!

I actually think that it'll age pretty well. There's a lot to like in that first act, so when people start getting the chance to check it out on TV and dvd, I think it'll play pretty well. Who knows - maybe in a few years it'll be the subject of a DOTM post titled "Why THE TOWN is better than I first thought"

I could swear that somewhere along the way you said you didn't like it - if not I'm confusing you with Kai. I'm thinking that was the case because it was the biggest hurdle in trying to argue it with you guys.

In a short amount of time - shorter than you'd guess actually - it'll probably start to lose that tag. There are other critical darlings (VERTIGO, THE GODFATHER) which are catching up fast. Do understand though, that there is a l-o-t of techniques going on in CK that look wicked simple, that involve a massive amount of filmmaking trickery.

@ Rachel... Funny, I thought we had spoiled it. If not, yay us!

And yeah, HEAT is one of my all time favorite movies so there was no way anything was beating it...hence my yelp of disbelief when Jess said she'd never seen it. Lean on your co-host to give it a look, won't you?

@Mad after a week of waiting for a response I had given up on one. As for the movie, most definitely, I'll email you here in a little bit (just in time for you to having stopped checking this post for a response from me).

@ Univarn... Sorry man, i was pretty bad with responding to comments this week. 'Sides, don't youy click the little button below that sends you an email when comments/responses appear on posts like these?

@ Dylan... Forgot to ask - what was it about the Aerosmith ditty that appealed to ya so much?

Fletch said...

Nothing mind-blowing - it was just a nice, topical change-up to your normal intro.

The Mad Hatter said...

@ Dylan... Interesting. Usually the intor ditty is chosen for the guest, but you're saying you like this switch where I hog the spotlight all for myself.

Good to know!

Hey, help me decide...the next episode is about THE SOCIAL NETWORK and I'm trying to decide between opening it with Kanye's "Power" or The White Stripes' "Ball and a Biscuit"

Fletch said...

Haha.

The answer is option C: "You've got a friend in me."

Short of that, I say Ball and a Biscuit. That was a welcome start to the flick.
