Sometime today I should receive an email from TIFF telling me what films I have indeed secured tickets for.
I'm actually quite optimistic that I'll score most of my first choices. You see, they pick a spot at random to start filling orders from to keep things fair - sorta like a wristband policy for concert tickets. While the randomly selected spot isn't going to do my friends Kurt and Danger Girl any favours, I'm hopeful that it works out well for me. I know - that sounds bad...I'm a bit greedy after a year off.
If I get everything, than one premiere I'll be especially looking forward to is the newest one from Alejandro "21 GRAMS" Gonzalez Inarritu. Here's a peek at this gritty opus.

First off, title of post is REM song... from UP if I remember correctly.
Secondly, Im suprised you say 21 GRAMS as the film of choice to represent the director. AMORES PERROS, I think is incredible... is 21 GRAMS better than that?
I am looking forward to BIUTIFUL though ... if not just for Javier Bardem, because he is an awesome actor!

How many films are you planning to see, Hatter? I'm afraid I won't get many of my firsts. I was in Box 1.
@ Anon... I've put in to see 20 films and my order is in box 17. Someone six boxes ahead of me has already been shut out of BIUTIFUL (and I requested the same screening) so I know the best I'm gonna do is go 19-for-20.
By far, the most desirable TIFF screening for me would be "Black Swan", "The Conspirator" and probably "Meek's Cutoff".
Best of luck with your draw :)
@ Simon... Indeed it is! Nice catch. I've actually never seen AMORES PERROS believe it or not (it's on the list). So it was either 21 GRAMS or BABEL for me.
Of course now that I've posted this trailer, I've discovered that this is one screening that I likely will NOT get in advance.
@ Chase... can't say I know terribly much about MEEK'S CUTOFF. Pardon me while I go look that up.
@ Castor... Still waiting to hear how I did - I'm starting to get antsy!
I'm in box 21, so I expect to hear tomorrow. I think my odds are pretty good (I didn't pick many galas), but I'll probably get bumped from "The Illusionist". I'm a little surprised that Biutiful "sold out" that quick - they were only 3 boxes in when it filled up? Hope you get everything else though.
All I've seen from Inarritu is "Amores Perres" (which I liked). I'll admit that the others (including the trailer from Biutiful) haven't really grabbed me. I'll get to them someday.
"Meek's Cutoff" is Kelly Reichardt's ("Wendy and Lucy") new one starring Michelle Williams again. I'm not as psyched as some are for this, but I do want to see it eventually. Since "Wendy And Lucy" was widely available, I expect this will be as well so I'll wait until after the festival (Next year I suppose).
I wonder if Bardem will be able to make his way into the thick of the Best Actor race. I'm sure he's good enough, but the film is so small, and buzz has seemed to steadily decline since Cannes. It feels like one of those films that really needs a good boost from its TIFF appearance.
@ Bob... i was hoping that tonight would turn into a dogpile of TIFF suggestions, however with only six of us it's hard to call it a dogpile.
Here's hoping box 21 brings you some goodness - be sure to post your schedule.
@ Danny... I certainly believe it's possible. I think the only reason why the buzz died down after Cannes is because after Cannes the film just got tucked away until its upcoming release.
There's been no wickedly buzzworthy acting contenders come out of the summer, so I'd wager javier's chances are as good as they ever were.
