Absolute Beginners: Chatter From Other Bloggers aka "Everybody's Talkin"

In July of 2009, I started one of my favorite weekly blogging features. See as awesome as I think it is that you've clicked on to my lowly patch of cyberspace...I'd be remiss if I didn't direct people's attention to other equally wonderful patches of cyberspace.

Thus, every Friday, I turn the mic over to various people I read and listen to online. They are the writers and podcasters that enlighten, amuse, and sometimes infuriate me - but above all else they inspire.

I have a few mental guidelines that I adhere to when I compile the weekly "Everybody's Talkin" (E-T) list:

  • I like to pull posts from the last seven days, re-enforcing the weekly timing of the post
  • I almost never feature the same blogger two weeks in a row
  • I try to vary up the content of the posts, and prefer not to post more than one review.
  • With my newfound love for podcasting, I've been trying to push my twenty eight listeners towards other bits of audio awesomeness.
The one other constant to the weekly feature is the photo that accompanies each post. You see, once upon a time, I wanted to be a pro photographer. And while the money might never have materialized, my passion for seeing the world through my camera lens never went away. Thus with one exception, the photographs that accompany every E-T post are my own work.

Now that I've explained all of that...

Remember that game show Univarn started a few weeks back...the one where I staged that amazing last-minute comeback? Well episode two has arrived pitting Heather the Movie Mobster against recent Matineecast guest GMan.

During the last pub night, conversation worked its way toward the films of Michael Mann and how bad MIAMI VICE may or may not be (for what it's worth - I dig it). Looks like it's not just me that digs it, since Wonders in The dark has created a post in Vice's defence.

The Kid in The Front Row just took in the double-feature of my dreams.

The Reel Fanatic takes an interesting look at 3-D's trend of diminishing returns.

The m0vie Blog has come up with an interesting theory surrounding the loveable star of the Toy Story series.

Enjoy!

Found out, too late, that the Bloor cinema did a double feature of Jaws and Close Encounters yesterday - that would have been cool to catch.

I really can't recommend Darren's Toy Story piece enough. Go read it guys!

I use some of the same methodology when posting my weekly links. I usually never link to reviews, and try to send people to some truly unique or more original content than usual. Also, I try to send people to a couple new blogs that I never visited before.

I agree with Fitz. Darren's piece was quite good.
Also, nice pic, Hatter... I hope that wasn't the one you didn't do (haha)... at first glance I actually thought it was umbrellas!

@ Danger... Yeah, I was late to the party on that too. I'll make up for it by checking out the Kurosawa double-bill later this month.

@ Fitz... Indeed - it is quite something, idn't it?

@ Castor... I can't say I'm that active with promoting the new blogs, but I do continually seek out new blogs to follow.

Gotta ask though - why don't you feature any reviews?

@ Webslinger... Nope, the only time I used a photo that wasn't mine was during TIFF...and there were no shortage of photos that week, so don't ask me why.

The shot for this post was taken down by the lake last summer when they were doing a Mexican Festival including dancing, music, and Luchador wrestling!

Not just for beginners...all this time, I never knew the accompanying pics were yours (I knew you were a photo nut, just not that you were sharing them). Nice touch!

@ Mad: I don't feature reviews simply because there is such an abundance of them and let's face it, 99% of them all state a variation of the same thing. For me to highlight a review out of the hundreds out there, it needs to be really unique and special. A secondary reason is that reviews simply aren't as attractive a link as a list or a focused argument on a controversial topic.

Darren's theory was most awesome. He's so observant of trends and otherwise in the movie world, I'm starting to wonder if he has super powers. He needs a super identity now.

Thanks for the shout to Univarn Hatter. I didn't make the most impressive showing, but darn it if I didn't try with my non caffeinated brain.

@ Fletch... Yeah, last pub night I mentioned that the photos were mine to Bob and he said "Y'know, you *might* want to point that out, because I don't think you've called any attention to that in the tome you've been tossing 'em up there".

@ Heather... I re-listened to my episode (since I don't get enough of the sound of my own voice), and noticed how badly I did. So don't feel bad.

Can't wait to listen to your episode all the way through.

@ Castor... Good point. Though sometimes I like to grab a review of something I want to see but haven't watched *yet*. Sort of like a 'coming attractions' for posts I intend to do.

Thanks for the link love - much appreciated.

@ Castor, Hatter: I actually finds reviews of films I've seen much more interesting because it feels like I can engage with it more - it's more like a discussion than just a stated opinion. I love seeing somebody make an argument for a film in a way I never would have thought of (The Shining as Native American metaphor, for example).

@ darren... Anytime! And I'm with you in terms of reading other reviews. My only rule is that I don't read them until after I've written my own.

Once mine is up though...it's time to sift through as many others as I can find...especially the ones that disagree with me!
