So after last year's "I'm not going-I'm going-I'm not going" ch-cha, it should go without saying that I cannot wait to dig into another autumn at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Well my wait appears to be almost over, as yesterday's news of the day unveiled the film that will open the whole she-bang. Returning to somewhat of a custom, the festival opens with a Canadian film...and quite an appropriate film where this country found itself so untied around our national sport last winter.
SCORE: A HOCKEY MUSICAL is a film written and directed by Michael McGowan. It's the story of a sheltered seventeen-year old boy (Noah Reid) is discovered by a talent scout (Stephen McHattie) and signed to play in a league, much to his parents chagrin (Marc Jordan & Olivia Newton-John). The film features music by Barenaked Ladies, Amy Sky and Hawksley Workman. It likewise features appearances by Workman, Nelly Furtado, Theo Fleury, Walter Gretzky, and George Stromboulopoulus.
Many of my American friends will likely never see this on a big screen - a pity given the fun on display in the film's trailer...

Since all the TIFF and other film festival coverages I've been looking into NC film festivals, and there's a few I may have a go with. Not any real major ones though. Outside ones held at some of the schools here.
The one they had a UNCG during my schooling there wasn't bad. Rather it contained a massive amount of movies I'd rather not see, or hear of again. Including one called Rome & Jewel, which I had to sit through for my one film class, which was a hip-hop interracial remake of Romeo and Juliet written by the guy who did 3 Ninjas Kick Back and K-911 (the straight to video sequel to K-9). Oh joy!
So, I guess what I'm saying is. One of these days I'm going to invade Toronto and catch this film festival. Or go somewhere and see a proper one, with proper movies!
I wouldn't figure myself as the kind of person to get excited about a musical, nor would I credit TIFF with an abundance of taste, but I am pleasantly surprised on both fronts. While I won't be able to take it in for geographical reasons, I doubt I'd be able to score passes anyway - Film Cynic or no Film Cynic. I barely get any respect from the Victoria Film Festival.
I'll be watching Score at one point or another, hopefully with someone who can appreciate the bits that might not be up my alley.
@ Univarn... Ya gotta start somewhere. Enjoy what you can get to for now, and start thinking of that TIFF invasion for a few years down the road.
@ Cynics... TIFF usually does bring in good stuff, but it's opening night slot (such as SCORE is) isn't always known to be a barnburner.
How the hell doesn't VIFF give you guys any love....haven't they heard the awesomeness that is your show?? Scandal I say!
